The Richardsonian Romenesque-style theater was the dream of local philanthropist and businessman William Smith, constructed with the vision of bringing culture and entertainment to the Finger Lakes area. In 1906, the building was used as part of the endowment for William Smith College, which would open in 1908. Hobart College (and the women’s college when it opened) took ownership of the opera house, and maintained ownership until 1912, when the property was bought by owner/manager B.B. From 1906, the building’s official title dropped the possession and was simply known as the Smith Opera House, the way that a lot of the younger generation knows it today.

The Smith’s auditorium is split into two levels, orchestra and mezzanine. Our orchestra section holds 929 seats, including all 12 ADA wheel chair accessible seats. Our rear orchestra seating is located under the mezzanine over hang.

For 128 years, the Smith Opera House (the Smith) has hosted entertainment of various genres to enthusiastic audiences. Looking at decades’ old local newspapers, it also appears the Smith Opera House welcomed discourse on social movements including the fight for women’s suffrage.
